Kabbee has conducted a study on a thousand people living in the UK, which revealed that Brits aren’t off on their holidays until they get to the airport. Filling in a holiday request form at work, or packing our suitcase no longer gives us Brits that ‘holiday feeling’.

Helping hundreds of thousands of travellers get the best minicab fares to and from London’s five airports each year, Kabbee was keen to understand when that all-important holiday feeling really kicked in. Here’s a summary of the results, based on when Brits get that holiday feeling:

  • Around one in five British holidaymakers said it was when the cab arrived to take them to the airport (17%)
  • Almost a quarter of holidaymakers said it was arriving at the airport with plenty of time to spare that gave them that bye-bye Britain buzz (23%).
  • The younger the holidaymakers, the earlier the buzz begins, with 23 percent of all 25-34 year olds saying their holiday begins when they turn off their emails and leave work, compared to just 16 percent of those aged 35-44 saying it’s not until they get to the airport that they can let their hair down (23%).

Remember, you can book your cab to the airport up to three months in advance – you’ll also get double miles for all airport journey with Kabbee’s loyalty programme!

Kabbee responds to Boris Johnson

Dear Boris,

I am writing to you in response to your recent announcement on capping the number of minicab licenses in London.

I understand that the number of private hire vehicle licences has risen from 52,000 to 77,000, and most of that increase is made up of new Uber drivers. However, with a rapidly growing population of 8.6million in the capital, it is our responsibility, as a minicab booking service along with others in the industry, to promote consumer choice and match supply and demand.

At the moment, it is difficult for both consumers and businesses in the private hire industry to assess the implications that would be brought about by this proposal, due to the lack of information on what the cap will actually be and how it would be implemented in London. It would be helpful to see more details on how you envisage the proposal working, as a limit may not necessarily be such a bad thing, if fair decisions were made and justified to the public.

Although at Kabbee we are not completely opposed to the idea of limiting minicab licenses, there is a real lack of data on congestion rising and the causes of it, which will raise doubts about the purpose behind the new proposal. We recommend considering an alternative solution which we would support by setting up higher barriers and regulations for minicab licenses, such as the English-language test and enhanced topographical skills.

We are keen to end the black cab and minicab war, and I am personally willing to hold an industry roundtable discussion whereby stakeholders can come together and identify a sustainable solution, rather than limiting choice for consumers. We are currently organising a roundtable to discuss the impact of Ultra-Low Emission Zones on the private hire industry, and last year we held one about driverless cars.

Since our launch in June 2011, the Kabbee app has been downloaded by more than 500,000 Londoners, who use the app to access 65 fleets and over 10,000 licensed minicabs. Kabbee is designed to Make Minicabs Mighty, to help Londoners move around the city. Our sophisticated technology enables Kabbee to match supply and demand, to ensure minicab drivers are always available for Londoners who need to get from A to B. The GPS-based software we developed called Live Plot has been implemented to connect drivers with passengers nearby, increasing efficiency and making minicabs more affordable with reductions in journey fares.

Last year, we requested that TfL allow minicabs to access bus lanes as black cabs do, to avoid congestion and to maintain a steady flow of traffic in the capital. I’m sure you’ll agree that this proposal would support any issues caused by congestion, and we strongly urge you to reconsider this request.

I would appreciate your consideration of this request, and if you are unable grant permission, please quantify your reason for this.

Kabbee’s Beat The Clock Challenge


To celebrate the 30,000 runners who have been pounding the pavements in preparation for the London Marathon this Sunday, we’re giving runners a chance to get £10 cab credit to save their tired legs.

All runners have to do is submit their target time before 9am on Sunday morning. They can do this by either sharing their target time on the Kabbee Facebook wall or on Twitter by using the hashtag #5MinPromise @Kabbee @LondonMarathon and then post a screen grab of their official finish time, using the same social media handles and hashtag before Sunday 3rd May 2015 to receive £10 free credit on their account*. 5 Minute Punctuality Promise T&Cs
The 5 Minute Punctuality Promise is part of Kabbee Treats loyalty programme and all GoldBees, SilverBees and BronzeBees are entitled to it. Just remember to let us know by rating your journey within two weeks of the pickup and the refund will be added to your prepaid account and will be valid for two weeks.
  • Kabbee’s ‘5 Minute Punctuality Promise’ covers bookings by customers eligible to receive Bronze, Silver and Gold rewards
  • Eligible bookings are those made at least 1 hour in advance and paid for using a Kabbee account (not cash or card)
  • Eligibility is defined at time of pick up not time of booking
  • The value of the original booking will be credited to the customers Kabbee account
  • Credit awarded will be valid for two weeks from time of application
  • The credit is not exchangeable for cash or other forms of credit

TfL’s plans for London’s minicab drivers

Boris Johnson recently announced a crackdown on minicab drivers who are ‘unable to speak English properly’, and proposed that they must pass an English-language test before becoming licensed. 

Here’s the key highlights:

  • Minicab drivers in London may be forced to take English language tests under new proposals announced by Boris Johnson.
  • The Mayor of London wants TfL to initiate new rules to ensure that private hire cab drivers have a “certain basic level” of English.
  • The announcement was made after a London Assembly member had called for more to be done to stop illegal touting by unlicensed cab drivers and reduce any safety concerns that may come with ordering a minicab. It was mentioned that touts are “getting away with it all the time”.
  • Helen Chapman, TfL’s general manager of taxi and private hire, said the English language test was being examined as a possible way of improving minicab services for Londoners. She said: “There is currently no statutory requirement for private hire drivers to speak a specified level of English, although all drivers must undertake a map reading test conducted in English.”

Based on TfL’s proposal, Phil Makinson, Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer at Kabbee, shared his thoughts on behalf of Kabbee below:

“We wholeheartedly support any industry wide initiatives that will improve the quality of the sector, just as we support and provide technology and processes to ensure the lives and livelihoods of good drivers are improved. We are confident that drivers who cannot communicate or navigate well will not be performing Kabbee jobs. English tests and increased knowledge requirements would support what we are doing.”

He also spoke about the policy that Kabbee follows:

“Our general policy is to ensure that all drivers are licensed and we monitor every journey through the ratings systems to ensure passengers are happy. We do not currently apply specific languages tests, but should a driver (or fleet) receive poor ratings for any reason, which could include inability to communicate satisfactorily with a customer, Kabbee would not hesitate to remove that driver or fleet from our service. Kabbee is focused on quality and value and good communication is central to this; our guidelines to drivers include all aspects of dealing with customers including how and when to speak to customers to ensure the journey goes well.”
